If you want culture and history, Tianjin provides.  Tianjin's history is long and so is it's list of places to see and things to do. 

 


Great Wall at Huangyaguan

This section of the Great wall, somewhat nearer to Tianjin (approx 2hrs), is a path less travelled.  The views here are a little fresher than those in Beijing and the section is very well maintained.
Take a bus from the northern bus station for 30RMB, or contact the front desk of your hotel (assuming it's above 2*) to arrange this outing.

Built in the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty, it is the biggest / most important Buddhist Temple in Tianjin and surrounding area. It is famous for it's sacrifices to the Tang Dyanasty monk, Xuan Zang.




Dagu Fort at NanjingDagu Fort

Add: Haihe River estuary 60km southeast to the city.

Opened to the public in June 1997, this fort represents a previous series of 20 forts originally built in the Ming Dynasty and then expanded coming up to the Opium wars.  After the colonial powers landed it was dismantled, but 2 sites remain to be seen today.




Confucius Temple at NanjingConfucius Temple

Add: 1 Zhongmen Rd., one street west of the Culture St.
Built in homage of Confucius, this temple dates back to around 1740. 

It was once a place where students would pray to thier great teacher for high marks.

Ancient Culture Street at Nanjing

The Ancient Culture Street is a tribute to ancient culture but not ancient itself. It was opend in 1986 with the obvious intent to promote history. 
This is a great place to find those knick-knacks that ispire jealousy others.

 



Notre Dame des Victories at Nanjing

Built origianlly in 1869, it has had to have many re-constructs. Damaged by the 1870 massacre, the Boxer Rebellion of 1900 and finally, the Tangshan earthquake of 1976.  The faithful pressed on though, and in 1983 it was re-built to what it is today.

Dule Temple at NanjingDule Temple

More than 1000 years old, this is the oldest multi-story wooden temple in China. If you like walking the halls of history, this is the place to see.

 



Garden of Tranquility (Ningyuan) 

Add: near the North Tianjin Railroad Station

An interesting complex built by Yuan Shikai, a short time pseudo-emperor of China coming out of the Qing Dynasty.  The complex illudes to his more tranquil side with nice ponds and gardens.
